Area rugs should be your next consideration.
They should always compliment your sofa and other fabrics
in the room. Make sure the rug covers your 'conversational
area". Choosing a rug that is too large or too
small is a common design faux paux.

The height of the cocktail table is largely determined
by the seat height of your sofa. Usually, 16 to 17 inches
in height and half the width of the sofa is a good general
rule.

If you already have your lamps, their height should
play an important role in the height of your end tables.
However, the tables should be no more than four inches
taller than the arms of the sofa.
|
|
| |
Lamps should be around 28 to 32 inches higher
than the arms of the sofa. Black parchment shades do
not allow as much light as white or off white, soft
pleated shades.

The biggest faux paux in hanging a picture
is hanging it too high! The best way to hang a painting
is so that your gaze meets it in the center or two thirds
the way up the canvas. You should lower it slightly
in the living room and dining room in consideration
of seated positions.

Hang a grouping of smaller pictures in unusual places
to add attention to them. Try over a door or under a
window. It is also nice to hang pictures on either side
of a mirror that's hung over a dresser or sideboard,
so that they extend beyond the end of the piece of furniture.
Remember if you're hanging only one picture over a sofa,
it should be approximately the same size as the coffee
table.

Accessories on a mantel should be in varying heights.
Placing them in front of a mirror that is hung over
the mantel adds depth to the room.

Screens are the rage! They can separate conversation
areas, act as room dividers or brighten up a dull corner.
And what a great idea to use the area behind them in
a corner for storage!
